On June 18, 2024, a tribute to one of the richest and most exciting chapters of the 20th century in the world of art and culture will take place in the Ehrbar Saal in Vienna – the Ballets Russes.
On May 19, 1909, Serge P. Diaghilev started his first season of the Ballets Russes in Paris. As the driving force of the ballet company, he assembled a wide range of composers, choreographers, designers and performers, but maintained ultimate control over every aspect of the productions. The designs and colors used in the Ballets Russes' productions created a new aesthetic in the 20th century.
The unprecedented combination of so many talents and arts made the Ballets Russes appear to many as a total work of art created in a new way. Diaghilevs' greatest achievement was ensuring the close integration of story, music, choreography and design, creating spectacles in which the overall effect transcended the roles.
